Masterplans & mixed use
We get a particular kick out of rethinking an entire quarter, district or zone. Our masterplan and mixed use projects require us not just to consider one or two buildings, but a chunk of world. We have to redefine its identity and meaning, balance and flow — sometimes even the category it occupies. We start by spotting missed potential.
One of the best illustrations of this is Stanhope’s reimagining of BBC Television Centre. What was once a singularly-focused ‘factory of television’ is now a lively, diverse collection of offerings: homes, workplaces, food & drink spots, gym & fitness facilities, a hotel and member’s club, flexible retail and redeveloped TV production facilities. By setting up this complex density of activities, we’ve reignited Television Centre’s energy and helped it to be iconic in a new way.
If that sounds simple, it isn’t. Bringing multiple layers of use into harmony is a skill we’ve taken decades to master. Now we want to use it to bring new life to underused parts of our cities, bringing more biodiversity, greater social impact and other big, innovative rethinks. Stay tuned for new projects like this, including Oxford North.
